Ntl Football Championship

2016NFC

The College Football Playoff National Championship determines the national champions for Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) college football. It is a bracket tournament between the top 4 teams in the country, nominated by a selection committee.  The games are played at neutral sites; and cities cannot host both a semi-final game and the title game in the same year.

On January 11, 2016, Arizona played host to the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship. This was the state’s eighth national championship contest since 1987.  The Arizona Organizing Committee, comprised of local leaders in business, tourism, and sports, was responsible for the management of the 2016 final which paired Alabama Crimson Tide against Clemson Tigers.

Seidman, in partnership with ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business Department of Marketing and the Sports Business Association, was commissioned to implement an economic impact study of the 2016 College Football Playoff National Championship.

The fundamental objectives for the project were threefold:

  • To collect primary survey data on the visitor and organizational expenditure associated with the Championship;
  • To generate estimates of the number, expenditures and demographics of visitors to the game;
  • To separately estimate the direct, indirect and induced economic impacts of the Championship decider, focusing on both the spending of out-of-state visitors and all relevant organizational spending.
